Tax Calendar for 2026-27: Key Dates for Self-Assessment Tax Returns

As the financial year comes to a close, it's time for self-employed individuals and business owners to start thinking about filing their self-assessment tax returns. The process can often be overwhelming, especially for those who are new to the world of taxes or managing their own finances.

To help you stay organised and ensure that you meet all the necessary deadlines, we have put together a tax calendar for the year 2026-27.

Let's dive right in!

1. April 6, 2026 - Start of the new tax year:

A new financial year begins, and it's time to gather all your receipts, invoices, and statements to keep track of your income and expenses. Starting early will give you a head start and help you avoid any last-minute stress or rush.

2. October 5, 2026 - Register for Self-Assessment:

If you're self-employed, a partner in a business partnership, or have other sources of income outside of employment, you need to register for self-assessment by this date. It's crucial to do this early to avoid any penalties or fines.

3. October 5, 2026 - Issue of Self-Assessment Tax Return:

If you've registered for self-assessment, HMRC will send you a notice to complete and file your tax return. Make sure you keep an eye out for this document, as it will contain crucial information related to your tax obligations.

4. October 31, 2026 - Deadline for Paper Returns:

If you prefer to file your tax return on paper rather than online, you must submit it by this date. However, it's worth noting that filing online offers several benefits, such as an extended deadline and instant confirmation of receipt.

5. January 31, 2027 - Online Tax Return Deadline:

This is the final deadline for submitting your online tax return for the tax year 2023-24. Missing this deadline will result in hefty penalties, so make sure you complete and submit your return well in advance to avoid any last-minute issues.

6. January 31, 2027 - Payment Deadline:

Alongside your tax return, you also need to pay any tax owed for the previous financial year by this date. It's vital to ensure you have enough funds set aside to cover your tax bill and make the payment on time to avoid any unnecessary fees or interest charges.

7. February 28, 2027 - Penalties for Late Returns:

If your tax return is still outstanding after the January 31 deadline, HMRC will impose an initial penalty of £100, which increases with time. Therefore, it's crucial to submit your tax return before the deadline, even if you're unable to pay the tax owed immediately.

8. July 31, 2027 - Second Payment Deadline:

If you owe more than £1,000 in tax and want to pay in instalments, you need to make your second payment by this date. By managing your payments in this way, you can avoid any excessive financial strain and ensure your tax liability is settled within a reasonable timeframe.
