This calculator is not personal advice and does not confirm whether you are eligible or how much you can pay into a pension. Results are a guide based on 2025/26 tax rules and do not cover every situation. Tax rules can change and the relief you receive will depend on your circumstances. Contributions over your annual allowance could trigger a tax charge. Your annual allowance may be reduced if you are a high earner or have taken flexible pension benefits.

How it works

  1. 1Add your total income for the tax year.
  2. 2Add what you paid into personal pensions (relief at source, for example a SIPP).
  3. 3See the estimated relief at basic rate and at your higher rate.
  4. 4Higher and additional rate relief is included through Self Assessment. We prepare and file it for you.

Questions

What is relief at source?
Your pension provider adds basic-rate relief (20%) to your personal contributions. If you pay tax at a higher rate, the extra relief is included through your Self Assessment tax return.
Is there a limit?
Relief is usually available on contributions up to your earnings for the year, within the annual allowance of £60,000. Anyone can get relief on contributions up to £3,600 gross.
Is the result exact?
No. It is an estimate based on the figures you enter. Your accountant confirms the figures when preparing your tax return.
Can you include it in my return?
Yes. Higher-rate pension relief is part of our Self Assessment service: press Get started and an accountant takes it from there.

Get an accountant to file it

An ACCA accountant checks your figures, prepares your tax return and files it with HMRC. You approve it first.
