Questions

How is income tax worked out?
Income above your Personal Allowance is taxed in bands: 20% basic rate, 40% higher rate and 45% additional rate in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland has its own bands. Allowable expenses and pension contributions can lower the tax due.
Can I use it if I am self-employed?
Yes. Enter your self-employed profit (income minus allowable business expenses) as part of your income. National Insurance is not included in this estimate.
Is the result exact?
No. It is an estimate based on the figures you enter. Your accountant confirms the final figures when preparing your tax return.
What if it shows I may have overpaid?
Tax that was overpaid is settled through your tax return. An accountant can check your records, prepare the return and file it with HMRC for you. You can also deal with HMRC directly for free at gov.uk.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
Online returns for the previous tax year are due by 31 January. Paper returns are due by 31 October.
